The industry experience questions below provide an indication of the types of tasks you will be required to provide evidence for in an assessment.
Consider each task described and select your answer on how regularly you perform this task safely within tolerance and without defect on the job. Consider this in respect of the last 2 years, as well as what is predicted in the next 6 months.
To meet our entry requirements you must successfully complete the Technical Industry questionnaire to proceed to enrolment.

Why is it important to prime Fibre Cement (FC) sheeting prior to tiling?

A primer satisfies the absorbency of the surface and also seals contaminants that may prevent following adhesives from bonding

A primer is not required as modern tile adhesives are all self priming

A primer is only required on external surfaces that are to be tiled

Explain the importance of matching manufacturers' components and materials when selecting a bonding system.

This is not required as long as water based and solvent based products are not mixed

This is only a requirement if a customer requests it

To not do so risks using incompatible materials which may result in system failure and may also void a manufacturers warranty.

What are the reasons for determining an appropriate grid pattern prior to laying wall or floor tiles?

A properly determined grid pattern ensures a symmetrical and balanced job which is pleasing in appearance and also minimises waste.

This is only required on small jobs where set out is more noticeable

If the grout colour is similar in colour to the tiles this is not important as the set out will be less noticeable

Only do this if specified by the builder / client

Why is it important to ensure a bottom course of wall tiles are cut and fixed to create a rake or square corner?

This is not important as the floor should be level and walls vertical

To not do so will void a manufacturers warranty

To ensure following courses run level and true

This is only important if an entire wall is to be tiled

What is a common cause of inconsistent colouring of wall and floor tiling grouts?

Using a grout from a different manufacturer to the tiles

Not mixing the grout as a single mixture for the job as different mixtures can result in colour variations.

Not applying the grout with a rubber squeegee

Adding an additive that allows flexibility in the grout

When grouting the internal corners between two walls or the internal corner where a wall and floor meet you must –

Always add a grout additive as this makes it more flexible can resist the movement of the building that is caused by expansion and contraction

Never apply gout to these joins as expansion and contraction movement will cause the grout to crack and fall out, silicone should be used.

Only apply the grout by a rubber squeegee to ensure sufficient grout fills the join

Only use a pre mixed grout

Bond breakers improve membrane adhesion in corners and this is required due to high movement in these areas

A bond breaker is not required if a surface is suitable primed as this ensures adequate adhesion of the membrane

A bond breaker serves the same purpose of joint sealant

Bond breakers allow a waterproofing membrane to stretch, rather than snap which would result in membrane failure

What is the most accurate method of determining the moisture content of a screeded sand and cement bathroom floor prior commencing the waterproofing and tiling process?

Place a plastic bag on the surface and the next day check for moisture that has risen to the surface

With the use of and electronic moisture meter

Physically touch the surface and feel for dampness

This is the builders responsibility as this should be covered under their insurance

When tiling a curved surface such as a column, how could you set out the job to ensure conformity of the tiles to the surface?

By visually inspecting the substrate for level and plumb
